Fishing the Fifty
My Quest to Fish All 50 States
I fished for blue catfish with Darryl Smith (captaindarryls.com) on Lake Moultrie near Cross, South Carolina. We had to delay the start of the trip because of high winds and, even after we got started, the winds made fishing very difficult, with sustained winds of 15 MPH becoming sustained winds of 20 – 30 MPH and gusts up to 41 MPH. The trip had to be cut short, but not before I caught a 25-pound blue catfish (my first South Carolina fish), a 12-pound blue catfish, and a 10-pound channel catfish. I was very thankful that Darryl took me out because I headed home the next day and would not have been able to make up the fishing trip without having to make another trip to South Carolina.
Eight days later, Darryl put a client on a 91.5-pound blue catfish, which, to that point, was the fifth fish over 90 pounds that Darryl has boated. I am confident that he has added, or will soon add, to that list.
